Profile of IGNOU Regional Centre, Madurai



INTRODUCTION


The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) established by an Act. of Parliament in 1985 under the aegis of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India has been promoting Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system in the Country to diversified learner groups of the society those deprived access to higher education due to various reasons.

IGNOU is the only one Central University for ODL system in the country having 21schools of study and a mega network of 67 regional centres and 7 sub-regional centres connecting more than 3500 Learner Support Centres across the country. During the last three decades IGNOU has emerged as a largest Mega Open and Distance University in the democratic world, offers wide range of high quality, innovative and need based skill development programmes to the aspiring learners from all the segments of the Society. The University has a mandate to reach out the diverse learner groups by providing need based academic programmes at affordable costs with latest ICT facilities and thereby increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in the Country. 

IGNOU Regional Centre, Madurai 

A sub-regional Centre at Madurai was established under IGNOU RC Chennai since April 2004 and later it becomes full-fledged Regional Centre on 18th January 2008. Operational jurisdiction of Madurai Regional Centre covers 17 districts in southern and western parts of the state of Tamil Nadu.  It has 118 learners support centres, among them 57 are B.Ed Regular Programme Study Centres. The following 16 districts of Tamil Nadu come under the jurisdiction of Madurai Regional Centre
